The Shell is almost UP!

The roof was off for almost two weeks, and during that time we got many many downpours! Most of my time was spent in the basement with the vaccuum. But thanks to lots of help form the parents, Skye and even Chad, I think we are now in the clear, now that the roof is ON!! Now we have to decide on a color...any suggestions????

Demo and Start of Construction

I can't believe it! The sky actually stopped pouring and the construction has begun at our place! First we had to move out completely....except for the basement. Now we are living in the DOME ( once the greenhouse dome) and a pop-up trailer our neighbor Kurt is letting us borrow. Our bedroom is in the dome, and the "office" and kitchen are in the trailer. Its actually a pretty sweet setup since we will probably be in here until October!

So Marks crew came on tuesday and started the demo of the cabin. What is left is just a shell. They did leave the kitchen sink, the fridge, and the toilet. The toilet looks pretty funny because its all by itself in a big open room! Then they cut a corner of the cabin off, and started to build!

Skye has been hand planing the logs to get the bark off the one rounded side, and to taper the edges. Course he loves the "workout"! Then its just lincoln logs all the way! Once they get as far as the roof they will take the whole roof off and put a new one on! Check it out!

Foundation Is IN!!!

As soon as the plastic got laid down, and the slab insulation got put in, Skye and I spent a couple of hours laying down the PEX for the radiant floor heat. Before the concrete guys got there I had laid out all insulation so putting it in was like a tetris by numbers. I also totally geeked out and drew the layout of the PEX on the insulation so we had a guide for the laydown. It made it super fast. I was worried about running out of PEX, but we had a few feet to spare.

Then after a week of rain, Bob and his team came in and finished pouring! Now we have a foundation! Its pretty sweet!

Skye sponsored a NEMBA film event in Burlington and we brought some famous Maple Mate to stoke out the crowd. We are totally addicted now to Yerba Mate sweetened with Maple Syrup.

Weekend Work at the cabin

This weekend mom & dad came up and dad was on a mission to spread some manure! Here he is rockin' it on the John Deere. We got the aged manure from a farmer down the street who hays our field in the summer for his cows. So its full circle...they eat our hay and we add their crap back to the land! yum yum!

I tackled the tarring of the foundation for waterproofing. Wow this stuff was sticky! I can't even imagine getting tarred and feathered...that would really suck!

Foundation has started

Ground Breaking began monday and by friday the foundation walls were poured! Unbelievable how quickly it all happened. Now you can see the outline of the future cabin. The long wall will be bumped out 12 feet and be a regular wall height. Then the roof will come off and a new roof will be put on and be much higher....we will probably gain a loft inside. The sunroom will be where the front door and chimney are & have a poured slab floor. Its fun to see the outline!

Work begins at the cabin

I can't believe its been almost 2 yrs since we moved to the NEK! Well our little cabin is about to get bigger. Skye and I are doing some groundwork to begin the expansion. We will be adding 12 ft to one side, a sunroom on the south, raising the roof and gaining a loft hopefully!

Here's Skye removing the little stone wall at the entrance to our place. We'll save the stones and do something cool with them later. Then he hacked the lilac bush on the corner, and cut down the two pine trees that sheltered the little cabin from those fierce west winds.

Looking a little naked now, its going to get worse before it gets better. ground breaking is April 27th!
